Closer to Midnight and other stories

A collection of short stories from Garston Writers Group

A5, Paperback, 160 pages, 36 stories, 16 writers

Published by Bookbinder
ISBN 978-1-9193568-0-8

This collection of short stories and flash fiction showcases the work of the Garston Writers Group, a raggle-taggle collective of Liverpool writers who meet weekly to hone their skills. Coming from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, the group members engage in weekly writing assignments, exploring a wide spectrum of subjects, themes, and styles. This results in a fascinating array of responses and interpretations. As a collective, the Garston Writers explore various genres but consistently return to the short story form. Perhaps this is because it resonates as a natural and familiar way to share experiences. From our earliest memories of sitting on laps, to our ancestors gathering and sharing a story by candlelight, its length being measured by the burning down of the wick and the last glowing ember of the evening’s fire. Each one, brief yet complete, encapsulating a whole event, a universal narrative.

Total Stranger

THE UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF PETE BURNS AND DEAD OR ALIVE 1978-1983 BY FRANCESCO MELLINA

Rock photographer Francesco Mellina became a friend of, then manager for the English band Dead or Alive. This Liverpool-based group of musicians was formed in 1980 and found success with their world-wide hit, You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). The track reached number one in the UK in 1985 and charted again in 2006 following the appearance of Pete Burns on the reality TV show, Celebrity Big Brother.

This collection of never-before-seen photographs charts the progression of Pete Burns and his band, Nightmares in Wax and its transition into Dead or Alive from 1978 through to 1983. Chosen from a catalogue of around 2,000 negatives, these photographs document the early career of Pete Burns, from enthusiastic and invigorating young artist, through the honing of DoA’s unique onstage presence. It covers the release of their first indie single, The Stranger, on Black Eyes Records, to Pete becoming the face of eighties-Liverpool and taking his place in Liverpool folklore.
